Songadeewin Wigwam
Located on the east side of Devil's Island, the Songadeewin Wigwam for girls began in 1999 and is tailored after the same canoe tripping program that has existed at Keewaydin for over 100 years. Led entirely by female staff, the camper to staff ratio in the Songadeewin Wigwam mirrors that of the same age groups in our boys' Wigwams.
The youngest girls, aged ten to twelve, have a three or six week option with canoe trips ranging in length from four to ten days. At this level, the program is designed with age appropriate activities in mind. These combined with daily canoe tripping activities help us meet the specific needs of our younger campers. For this reason the trips are kept shorter and the days less strenuous than in older groups.
Girls aged thirteen to fifteen stay for six weeks and depart on canoe trips of five, ten and twenty-one days in length. At this level our girls start off on a five day trip intended to educate them in the basics of wilderness canoe tripping. Before midseason they will venture out for ten days on a trip that is more difficult, but selected for its combination of beautiful scenery, and challenging terrain. The culmination of the summer is a three week adventure that will take them down one of our nearby rivers, and through the more remote lake's of the Temagami region.
Our senior group of girls, aged fifteen and older, have the option for longer trips based out of our Outpost in western Ontario or a full summer canoe trip in the Hudson's Bay watershed or beyond. These girls are our most experienced female canoe trippers and have usually completed several seasons in our base camp program. These groups generally have about eight girls and two of our most senior female trip staff.
