The Evans Outpost
Founded in 1977 by Heb Evans, the Outpost is 1000 miles west of our Temagami base camp and provides a unique canoe tripping experience for boys and girls age fourteen and older who have spent at least one summer at Keewaydin. A typical Outpost section has six to eight campers and two senior staff. While the same skills are utilized on a canoe trip at the Outpost, the experience is wholly unique. Surrounded by an expansive wilderness, the campers at the Outpost seldom see other travelers, and are exposed to the seclusion that is usually reserved for only our older sections. It opens the door for the first time to the large, untouched wilderness that becomes the norm during future summers at Keewaydin.
It is during this time at the Outpost that campers are able to build on the basic knowledge they have gained during previous years in base camp. They grow into stronger, more experienced canoe trippers, and develop a broader foundation from which to grow. It is the skills they begin to master at the Outpost that ready them for the further challenges that lie ahead during the full summer canoe trips available in the Temagami and Songadeewin Wigwams.
