Activities
Due to the emphasis on canoe tripping, much of the time in camp is spent relaxing and preparing for the next trip. Staff and campers organize daily recreational activities such as softball, soccer, volleyball or tennis, but these are informal and not of an instructional nature. During their time in base camp, campers re-outfit and plan their next trip together in the Keewaydin map room. They also gather in the lodge for a variety of activities ranging from slideshows to board games. Other activities include swimming, fishing, reading, and letter writing.
Throughout the summer campers have the opportunity to tell tales of their journeys at informal campfires that are open for all to attend. Typically the youngest kids in the Manitou and Songadeewin Wigwams hold campfires after each trip while the older Waubeno, Algonquin and Songadeewin campers tell their stories at season's end.
Midseason
Midseason is a four day event that marks the midpoint of the summer for groups operating out of base camp. There are contests in which sections compete as a group to demonstrate cooking and camping skills. In addition there are individual competitions in swimming and canoeing. The competitions are kept informal; designed to be fun and provide a well deserved break in the summer. Evenings are made lively with campfires and a midseason show where sections perform skits and sing songs with the entire camp, friends and family in attendance.
End of Season
Before camp closes for the season, all sections arrive back on Devil's Island. For two days campers participate in friendly competition, ceremony, and a final campfire. The oldest boys and girls from the season's long trips have the opportunity to tell stories of the summer, in their own words. It is a very festive time where the youngest and oldest campers have the opportunity to share their experiences, and spend time with family and friends.
